What Public Speaking Is-How To Succeed
"What is public speaking?" is a question asked by those learning they will have to stand before an audience for the first time in their lives. Unless you are used to making public speeches it is easy to predict that you will feel a certain amount of apprehension when first asked to speak in public. That apprehension can easily turn into panic which causes real physical sysmptoms in many cases. It isn't uncommon for many to turn to medication to calm the nerves but there are much better ways to learn to control the situation which is much healthier and much longer lasting.
Generally speaking, there are a couple types of people who react to the thought of giving a speech with uncontrolled nervousness. The first type is the person who has no reference point to compare this with since they have never been asked to get before a group before. The second type of person is one who has attempted to speak publically before and for some reason or another has failed miserably. This person might have been overcome with nervousness which might have made them run from the stage thus making the memory of the event ever so worse in their minds. This case takes a great deal of effort to overcome.
The most important thing to remember if you are feeling uneasy about making a public speech is the simple fact that this feeling is absolutely normal. It actually is a mental and biological function and doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you. Since it is a natural feeling, you can take steps to build yourself up to the event so you might overcome the feelings in a natural way. As you might expect, one of the best ways of doing so is by practicing in a mental as well as physical way.
The person most fearful of "what is public speaking going to do to me?" is usually the one who have attempted to speak before with poor results. Naturally this individual feels that public speaking is impossible for him to perform. For someone in this situation, practicing might even make things worse as it brings back memories of past failures. Anyone in this situation must actually look deeper into the problem and use aids for relaxation and might even have to resort to hypnosis to overcome the anxiety.
When a person learns modern techniques of public speaking, he will be on his way to overcoming the problem. Effective techniques can directly affect the mind and gradually ones lack of confidence will disappear. Probably one of the best things to do is to practice which involves examining the entire situation you will be exposed to. Even visiting the room in which you will speak can be valuable in making your feel more relaxed.
Maintaining an understanding of what public speaking is and what is the rehearsal will improve the practice sessions be more productive. The use of many notes won't really help since they tend to hide the real problem and make it even more difficult to perform without them. If you do write out a speech, it generally is good to go through it once with the notes and then put them aside so you can speak more naturally. Many have found it best to leave the notes outside the room when practicing.
This vital preparation can be augmented in many other ways to make sure that you go into the speech room ready for every eventuality. Before the day arrives, practice as many times as you can in the same room, if you have access to it. Make sure you use the same equipment that you will be using on the day, or as close to it as you can get if some things are going to be hired just for one day. When you cannot practice in the room itself, use visualization as this has proven highly effective.
If you know what is public speaking and what is effective in masking nerves you will have what it takes to make a success on the day itself. There are some more effective techniques you can try when you first arrive at the speaking venue. You can get your mental focus in the right place by concentrating on the speech itself, and none of the outside distractions. Don't think about yourself, or how you are going to deliver the speech, as this will only give the nerves another chance to reappear. Concentrate on the content and you will really know what is public speaking.
